Training
Training and Continuing Education
Medical providers trained in the components of the Reach Out and Read model are key to successful implementation of the ROR program. Training provides each professional caregiver with the following:
- Awareness of the importance of reading aloud and text-rich environments to the development of early literacy skills
- A review of research-based strategies to enhance development of language and other skills that can lead to later reading success
- Appreciation of the provider's own ability to influence parents' attitudes and behaviors around reading aloud
- Ability to evaluate and assess a child's developmental progress based on the child's interactions with a book
- Understanding of how early literacy intervention can be combined with other anticipatory guidance about bedtime routines or challenging behavior
ROR Washington State Training Support
We want each ROR program to get off to a good start with the knowlege, skills, and confidence to begin sharing ROR with families. We also know it is important for new providers joining a practice to receive training, and for all providers to do an "update" at least annually. ROR Washington State provides training assistance to our programs in a variety of ways, including:
- Initial Reach Out and Read program training: We help facilitate initial trainings for new programs, coordinating in-person training whenever possible. If you are an applicant or newly approved program who hasn't made training plans with us, please contact us.
- Ongoing Reach Out and Read program training: We develop statewide training supports with our Medical Director and statewide trainers, so we can share best practices across the state. If you have questions, or ideas to share, please contact us.
- Early Learning and Literacy Resources: We help our providers and practices know about research, policies, and practices around early learning, so that they can better support children and families in their communities. If you have specific topics you are interested in, or ideas to share, please contact us.
ROR National Center Training Support
