Reach Out and Read Washington State Programs

Almost every month new programs start in counties across Washington State. See our latest Program List. You can also find Washington State Reach Out and Read Programs at our National website, where you can display the programs by county or legislative district, and see an interactive map depicting the program locations. Reach Out and Read Washington State also periodically updates a map of Washington counties which shows the number of programs in each county and region. See Reach Out and Read Washington Map. If you would like to connect with one of our programs, please contact us.

Special Initiatives

Reach Out and Read strives to serve all children and families, with an emphasis on children growing up in poverty. In addition, some populations have been identified for a special focus in our recruitment and support efforts nationally.  All of these populations have a significant presence in Washington state, so we partner actively with the following initiatives.

American Indian/Alaska Native:  Reach Out and Read and the American Academy of Pediatrics are working together to reach more American Indian/Alaska Native children with Reach Out and Read programs. In Washington the Puyallup Tribal Health Authority began the first Reach Out and Read program in a tribal setting in 1999, followed by the Tulalip Health Clinic in 2002.  In 2009 we helped start new clinics in partnership with the Seattle Indian Health Board; the Colville Indian Health Center and Omak Indian Health Center; the Lummi Tribal Health Clinic; the Nooksack Tribal Clinic; the Port Gamble S’Klallam Medical Clinic, and the Yakama Nation Health Centers in Toppenish, Wapato, and White Swan. Most recently in 2010, the Makah Tribe launched their program at the Sophie Trettevick Indian Health Center. Learn more about our American Indian/Alaska Native Initiative

Military:  The National Defense Appropriations Act of 2007 provided funding for implementation of a pilot project on pediatric early literacy at 20 military health care facilities in the U.S. and overseas, laying the foundation to one day reach all military families with young children. 32 military bases currently offer ROR programs. Reach Out and Read Washington State is proud to partner with military providers in order to serve military children and families. Fairchild Air Force Base was Washington’s first Reach Out and Read program in the military, and we were delighted to launch Madigan Army Medical Center in 2009. Madigan later partnered to launch at McChord Air Force Base, and the Navy Program in Everett started in 2011.  In 2012 we are planning to launch the Navy Hospital in Oak Harbor, bringing us to 4 military programs in Washington.  We continue to develop partnerships to support military families in communities across Washington state, recognizing that many families are served in health care facilties which are off-base. Spanish Speaking/Leyendo Juntos:  Reach Out and Read serves thousands of Spanish-speaking families across the nation.  Leyendo Juntos (Reading Together) is an effort to continually improve our efforts to meet the cultural and linguistic needs of these communities.  Reach Out and Read is proud to serve a large portion of the Spanish-speaking population in Washington state.  The SeaMar Community Health Centers have 16 clinics in Western Washington serving a mostly Spanish-speaking population; and Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinics, Yakima Neighborhood Health Services, and Columbia Valley Community Health Center are among those who serve a significant portion of Spanish-speaking families in Central/Eastern Washington.  Many of our clinics across the state serve families where English is a second language, and we have a large selection of Spanish and bilingual books (in addition to books in 11 other languages).
