New Books

Reach Out and Read medical providers give young children brand new, developmentally and culturally appropriate books to take home and keep during each well-child checkup. The nationwide Reach Out and Read program is able to negotiate substantial discounts with publishers, which directly benefit ROR programs in Washington state.  Programs should log into myROR.org and click on the "books" tab.  Here you can view the ROR Scholastic catalogue, find ROR-specific contact information for publishers, and learn about special deals.  ROR continually strives to make high quality, culturally and linguistically relevant books for young children available at the lowest possible cost. ROR programs always choose their own books, matching them to the families they serve. ROR Washington State staff is here to help you with any questions related to books. Used Books

Gently used books are often part of ROR programs as part of literacy-rich waiting rooms.  These books can be enjoyed by families in the office; and many practices encourage families to take them home to keep, or to read and return. These books can also help expand ROR's literacy promotion efforts beyone well child visits by offering used books at "sick visits," or to siblings who are in the office during another child's checkup. Think of ways that you can encourage used-book donations.  Some examples include staff and patient donations and encouraging local schools or service groups to collect  books - this can be a great scout or youth group project.  Please share your ideas with us, so other programs can learn from your successes.
